Security Info & Travel Checklist

Security update 20 Sept. Earlier this week protests and demos took place across the city of Addis Ababa.

We are continuing to monitor the situation in Ethiopia. Things are calmer and the NNN will still be going ahead.

Please observe the security guidance below.

We recommend the following to ensure your safety:

  • Take the organized transport from the airport to your hotel so that you go direct and via a safe route. You will also be safer inside the airport waiting than outside in the car park trying to find a taxi. All hotels offer this, some charge a fee but some are free, all are in the arrivals areas so don’t leave the building until advised by your driver.
  • Follow the twitter account for the embassy of your country of origin. The UK is @UKinEthiopia, US is @USEmbassyAddis . Live updates will be sent through these.
  • Be sure to sign up for email alerts from your country of origin’s foreign office.
  • Download the conference app as we will post updates through it.
  • Avoid areas where large crowds may gather, such as Meskel Square and the area around the National Stadium.

Should you have any further concerns please contact your organisation’s security advisor.

The following check list contains a summary of the essential items that you should check before you depart.

Travel Arrangements

It is the responsibility of each delegate attending the 9th NNN annual conference to organise their own travel arrangements including visa, transfers, flights, accommodation or any on the ground arrangements. Please see the relevant visa and accommodation tabs for further information.

Most of the hotels offer an airport shuttle to Bole International either included in your bedroom rate or for a small fee.

Make sure you have given your emergency contact details and a copy of your travel itinerary with your company, family or trusted colleague

Please ensure an adequate travel insurance is in place in accordance with your company travel policies.

Health Requirements & Vaccinations

Please consult your doctor to determine any vaccinations that you may need to travel to Ethiopia. A Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission and for travellers having transited more than 12 hours through the airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Visit the WHO website for information regarding risk countries. Vaccination against cholera is also required for any person who has visited or transited a cholera-infected area within six days prior to arrival in the country.

Ensure that you speak to your doctor about any health concerns you may have and that you have enough supplies of personal medication to cover you while you are away. Please ensure to travel with your record of vaccinations certificate with you.

If you have any existing medical conditions it is advisable to inform the Events Team on admin [at] nnnevents [dot] com.

If you need emergency medical assistance during your trip, dial 907 and ask for an ambulance. You should contact your insurance/medical assistance company promptly if you are referred to a medical facility for treatment.

The United Nations Health Centre, situated on the ground floor of the Conference Centre, provides emergency medical services to participants/delegates attending meetings.
